Review: Emma Cline's Short Story Collective 'Daddy'

Daddy: Amazon.co.uk: Cline, Emma: 9781784743727: Books

Emma Cline has a sharp ability to pick the brains of the thoroughly well-written characters in 'Daddy'. Each story covers tricky territories and displays these super realistic characters in settings that seem fitting. A common theme is of course fatherhood, but not in a blistering and obvious sense - more the small elements of fatherly relationships displayed in an array of delicate ways in these anecdotes. Each character in this collective is clearly well-established - the only downfall in this book are the weakness of a few of the story lines.

The stories I loved particularly were: 'Los Angeles' & ‘A/S/L’, individually these are 5/5’s

Unfortunately a few of the other stories were too uninteresting for me, thus bringing my overall rating down to three stars. Though, I would still recommend reading 'Daddy', there is an understanding to be gained from it - and to be honest, I would pick up a copy of this solely for 'Los Angeles'.
